Wanting What You Got

My blogging friend Mike wrote a story that put me in mind of this song.

The line – It’s not having what you want, It’s wanting what you’ve got sums it pretty much up. In a world where everything screams “you need this” or “the must have of the year” we can lose perspective. I knew a couple several years ago that chose to do missionary work because they felt that the world was missing the important things. And the thing that sealed the deal? An ad campaign for a product that eliminated static cling.

Sung by Sheryl Crow and from the 2002 album “C’mon C’mon” this weeks Musical Thoughts is “Soak Up The Sun”

Mike thanks for the reminder!

Special Day Today!

April 29, 2011 6 comments

Surprisingly I’m not talking about Kate and William. 22 years ago, I started a new chapter in my life. I married my best friend! Since then we have made a life together, fought and loved, brought 2 children home from the hospital, … It’s been one hell of a ride, and I’m ready for a least 22 years more!

I love this song! Yes it’s true! I am a big sap. (I can’t turn in my “guy” card because it would seem that I was never issued one.) By Peter Gabriel and from the movie “Shall We Dance?” I present a special Musical Thoughts.

P.S. – Kate and Will. You guys picked a pretty good day.

When the Lights Went Out

April 27, 2011 2 comments

Mystery. This genre has been on my mind a lot the last few weeks. You have to admire a writer that can have you thinking in one direction, while all the time the real answer is there in plain sight for those who are paying attention. Fun to both read and write, the Mystery is fast becoming a favorite type of story for me.

When I thought of songs that would fall into this genre, this was the first one to come to mind. I can still remember hearing this song on the radio during my childhood. If you listen to the lyrics, you will see that it is a mystery story set to music. And like all good mysteries it has a neat little twist at the end.

So for this weeks Musical Thoughts, I offer you “The Night The Lights When Out In Georgia” by Reba McEntire.

Voice of a Muse

April 19, 2011 2 comments

My Friend Selena over at Solitary Words was writing today about Muses. As writers (or other types of artists) we often speak of our Muse, and how it inspires us to create. Selena asked for her readers to share what their Muse’s voice sounds like to them.

So here goes. My Muse just happens to sound like the 80’s pop-star, Olivia Newton-John. And Olivia, by a happy coincidence, just happened to play the role of – wait for it – a Muse. (Bet you didn’t see that one coming)

So this is for you Selena, and for all the Muses out there too. I present from the 1980 movie of the same name, this weeks Musical Thought – Xanadu! I’m not going to even look for puns or try make clever remarks. So just sit back and enjoy the dream girl of most 14-year-old boys during the 80’s & ELO (Electric Light Orchestra) as they spin a bit of roller/disco/funky magic.

I hope you find it amusing!

Flash! AAA-AH!

April 11, 2011 1 comment

It’s amazing how one thing can lead to another (hey that’s a song too!). Do a little Flash Fiction writing, and “aaa-ah” I picked this song!

I really like Queen, but this song isn’t in the top 10 for me (heck maybe not the top 30). You need to remember that it was for the movie soundtrack of (wait for it) “Flash Gordon” (there it is!) so it was never going to be of the same quality as, say Bohemian Rhapsody. Still this song does offer the amateur song lyric spoofer with plenty of opportunity to try for cheap laughs. One of my personal favorites is “doom doom doom doom doom doom doom doom FLASH! aaa-ah, even a cat can play this song! Flash aaa-ah, the dog will sing along!”

You will note I’m trying very hard to avoid saying anything about the actual movie. Lets just say this, I would rather beam down on a Star Trek away team wearing a red ensign’s shirt then ever watch it ever again!

Living in a household that loves Queen, I have done the unthinkable and mocked them. So could I ask that one of you to “dispatch war rocket Ajax” to get my body please 😉 . Enjoy.

Oh, and This morning’s unprecedented solar eclipse is no cause for alarm, OK
